The emergency hearing was scheduled for Monday morning.
Less than seventy-two hours after Sofia escaped her honeymoon suite.
Javier's petition claimed Sofia suffered from "acute emotional instability," had abandoned the marital home without explanation, and was improperly withholding family assets.
His lawyer also suggested her accusations against Carmen were exaggerated because of "post-wedding stress."
When Rebecca read that sentence aloud, I nearly threw a coffee cup across the hotel room.
Alexander didn't react.
Sofia did.
She laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because sometimes cruelty became so absurd that tears weren't enough.
"They're saying I imagined it."
Rebecca closed the folder.
"They're trying to create doubt."
Sofia touched the bruise on her arm.
"Good luck."
Monday morning, we entered the Dallas County courthouse through a side entrance.
Sofia wore a dark blue dress.
Not because anyone told her to.
She chose it herself.
"I don't want them seeing me as the bride they broke," she said.
Alexander walked beside her.
I stayed on her other side.
When we entered the courtroom, Carmen was already seated.
Perfect hair.
Pearl earrings.
Cream-colored suit.
She looked like a woman attending a charity luncheon.
Javier sat beside her.
He couldn't look at Sofia.
Darren Cole sat behind them.
That surprised us.
Rebecca leaned toward Alexander.
"He shouldn't be here."
Alexander whispered, "He's arrogant."
The hearing began.
Javier's attorney spoke first.
He painted Sofia as overwhelmed, confused, and manipulated by estranged parents who had suddenly reentered her life.
Apparently Alexander's decade-long absence became part of their argument.
"Colonel Brooks had virtually no relationship with his daughter for years," the attorney said. "Yet within hours of a marital disagreement, he appeared and began directing her financial decisions."
Alexander sat perfectly still.
I knew that was difficult.
The attorney continued.
"The petitioner seeks only temporary authority to protect shared marital interests until Ms. Brooks receives appropriate psychological evaluation."
Rebecca rose.
"Your Honor, their definition of protection appears to involve assault, coercion, document fraud, and intimidation."
Javier's lawyer objected.
The judge allowed Rebecca to continue cautiously.
Then Rebecca introduced Sofia's hospital records.
Photographs of bruises.
Hotel security footage.
The forged condo transfer.
Javier's attorney tried to distance him from Carmen.
"He wasn't inside the room."
Rebecca looked at him.
"No."
She turned toward Javier.
"He stood outside."
The courtroom became silent.
Then she played the hallway video.
Javier waiting.
Carmen emerging.
The folder changing hands.
Sofia escaping later through the stairwell.
Javier looked down.
Carmen did not.
The judge asked, "Mr. Robles, did you know your wife was locked inside that room?"
Javier's attorney stood.
"Your Honor—"
"I asked him."
Javier swallowed.
"Yes."
A murmur moved through the courtroom.
"Did you enter?"
"No."
"Did you call hotel security?"
"No."
"Police?"
"No."
"Did you attempt to assist your wife?"
Javier hesitated.
"No."
The judge leaned back.
"Interesting."
Rebecca introduced Michael's messages.
Then Darren's.
Then Carmen's.
Darren suddenly whispered urgently to his attorney.
Carmen's face finally changed.
Rebecca played the audio.
The colonel's daughter is worth more married than single. Get the ceremony done before the loan deadline.
Sofia closed her eyes.
Alexander stared forward.
I held my daughter's hand beneath the table.
Then came Carmen's recording.
She'll sign. Every bride wants to please her husband eventually.
When it ended, the courtroom stayed completely silent.
Rebecca approached the bench.
"Your Honor, this petition isn't an attempt to protect Ms. Brooks. It is the continuation of the coercion that began before the wedding."
Javier's lawyer tried to recover.
"These messages are being investigated. Their authenticity—"
Detective Reynolds entered through the courtroom doors.
Every head turned.
She approached the bailiff and handed him a document.
The judge reviewed it.
Then looked toward Carmen.
"Mrs. Robles."
Carmen stood.
The judge's voice was flat.
"It appears detectives have obtained arrest warrants related to assault, conspiracy, coercion, and attempted fraud."
Carmen turned pale.
The courtroom exploded in whispers.
The judge struck his gavel.
"Order."
Carmen stared at Sofia.
For the first time, the polished mask disappeared.
"This is your fault."
Alexander stood halfway.
Rebecca grabbed his sleeve.
Sofia did something better.
She stood.
"No."
Carmen's eyes burned.
Sofia's voice trembled, but she kept speaking.
"This happened because you thought I was property."
Javier whispered, "Sofia."
She turned toward him.
"And you let her."
His face crumpled.
"I was scared."
"So was I."
Those three words silenced him.
Detective Reynolds walked toward Carmen.
Carmen backed away.
"You don't understand."
Reynolds said calmly, "Ma'am, place your hands where I can see them."
"This family owes us!"
Alexander stared at her.
"For what?"
Carmen looked at him.
"For everything your daughter took from Javier."
Sofia laughed once.
"What did I take?"
"His future!"
"No."
Sofia stepped forward.
"You tried to build his future using my money."
Javier finally broke.
"Mom, stop."
Carmen spun toward him.
"Don't you dare."
"Stop."
"After everything I did for you?"
Javier stood.
Sofia stared.
Carmen's voice rose.
"I saved this family."
"You destroyed it."
Carmen looked stunned.
Javier turned toward Detective Reynolds.
"I want to give a statement."
His attorney whispered urgently.
Javier ignored him.
"A full statement."
Carmen screamed his name.
He didn't look at her.
That was the moment her control finally shattered.
By the end of the hearing, Sofia's emergency petition was dismissed entirely.
A temporary protective order was granted against Javier and Carmen.
Darren Cole left the courthouse with investigators waiting outside.
Carmen left in handcuffs.
Javier remained with his attorney and Detective Reynolds.
Sofia stood on the courthouse steps afterward.
The morning sun made her squint.
Alexander approached.
"You okay?"
"No."
He nodded.
"Good answer."
She smiled faintly.
"I'm tired of people asking."
"Then I won't ask again."
Sofia looked at him.
"Dad?"
"Yeah?"
"Why did you really stop calling?"
Alexander's face changed.
I watched from several feet away.
He looked at me.
Then back at Sofia.
"Because I was stupid."
Sofia blinked.
"I thought your mother didn't want me around."
I frowned.
"What?"
Alexander continued.
"And I was too proud to ask."
I stared at him.
"I thought you didn't want us."
He looked at me.
"Seems we were both talented at silence."
Sofia shook her head.
"Ten years?"
Neither of us had an answer.
She looked between us.
"That's ridiculous."
Alexander smiled.
"Yes, ma'am."
For the first time since Friday night, Sofia laughed.
It was small.
Fragile.
But real.
Then Rebecca came running through the courthouse doors.
Her face was pale.
"Alexander."
He turned.
"What?"
"There's a problem."
She held up her phone.
"The trust account."
My heart stopped.
"What about it?"
"Someone initiated a wire transfer Friday morning."
Sofia stared.
"Before I escaped?"
Rebecca nodded.
"Five point six million dollars."
Alexander's face hardened.
"Did it go through?"
"No."
Everyone exhaled.
Rebecca didn't.
"But whoever initiated it had internal trustee credentials."
Alexander frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Rebecca looked terrified.
"It means Carmen and Darren didn't do this alone."
She swallowed.
"Someone inside my office helped them."
And suddenly the conspiracy became bigger than any of us had imagined.
