Chapter 4

By My Life Story Editorial · Published · Updated

Michael denied everything.

At first.

When I called him, he laughed.

"Javier told you that?"

"Yes."

"He's desperate."

"Do you know Darren Cole?"

Pause.

Only half a second.

But I heard it.

"Who?"

"Darren Cole."

"No."

"Michael."

"Elena, you sound insane."

"My daughter was assaulted."

His tone softened.

"I heard."

"From who?"

Another pause.

"Family gossip."

"What family?"

"People talk."

"The wedding ended less than two days ago."

Silence.

I gripped the phone tighter.

"How did you hear?"

"I don't know. Facebook. Someone."

"There has been nothing posted publicly."

Michael exhaled.

"Elena, I'm not doing this."

"You knew."

"Knew what?"

"About the trust."

"We all knew Sofia had money."

"Not how much."

Michael said nothing.

"Did you tell Carmen?"

"No."

"Did you tell Darren?"

"No."

"Did you accept money?"

"Absolutely not."

I closed my eyes.

I wanted to believe him.

He was my younger brother.

The boy who used to follow me to school.

The teenager I taught to drive.

The man who carried Sofia on his shoulders when she was five.

"Michael," I whispered. "Tell me the truth."

He hung up.

Alexander was standing across the hotel room.

He had heard everything.

"He's involved."

I hated how certain he sounded.

"You don't know that."

"Elena."

"He's my brother."

"And Javier is Sofia's husband."

That shut me up.

Sometimes family titles were simply labels we used until behavior proved whether they still mattered.

Detective Reynolds was interested in Michael immediately.

Especially when Rebecca discovered something disturbing.

Three months before the wedding, Michael had received two payments totaling $60,000 from a consulting company connected to Darren Cole.

The payments were labeled "business development."

Michael had never worked in real estate.

Rebecca placed the bank records on the table.

"This isn't proof of conspiracy."

"No," Alexander said. "But it's smoke."

Sofia sat quietly.

She hadn't spoken much since learning her uncle might have been involved.

Eventually she asked, "Why would Uncle Michael do this?"

I didn't know.

But Alexander did.

"Debt."

I looked at him.

"What?"

"Michael called me two years ago."

I stared.

"You spoke to him?"

"Once."

"Why?"

"He asked for money."

"How much?"

"Two hundred thousand."

My mouth fell open.

"What for?"

"Gambling debt."

I felt suddenly sick.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"We weren't speaking."

"He asked you not me?"

"He said you would judge him."

I laughed bitterly.

"So he asked the ex-brother-in-law he hates."

"He was desperate."

Alexander sat beside me.

"I gave him twenty thousand."

"You what?"

"He said men were threatening him."

"Alexander!"

"I didn't know what else to do."

"Did he repay you?"

"No."

The room went quiet.

Rebecca looked through another file.

"If Michael still has serious debt, sixty thousand dollars would explain why Darren could recruit him."

Sofia stood.

"No."

We all looked at her.

"No more talking about everyone like I'm not here."

Her voice trembled.

"This is my life."

Alexander nodded.

"You're right."

"I want to know everything."

So we told her.

Every account.

Every connection.

Every suspicious payment.

Sofia listened.

Then she made a decision that surprised all of us.

"I want to talk to Uncle Michael."

"No," I said immediately.

"Mom."

"He betrayed you."

"Then I want him to admit it."

Alexander leaned forward.

"In person?"

"Yes."

Rebecca shook her head.

"That could be risky."

Sofia looked at her.

"Then we do it somewhere safe."

Detective Reynolds hated the idea even more than we did.

But after some discussion, she arranged for Michael to meet me at a coffee shop while investigators monitored nearby.

Michael believed only I would be there.

When he walked inside and saw Sofia sitting beside me, he stopped.

For a moment, he looked ashamed.

Then defensive.

"Sofia."

She didn't smile.

"Sit down."

Michael obeyed.

He was fifty-one but looked older.

His eyes were tired.

His hands wouldn't stay still.

I wondered how long he had been afraid.

Sofia placed the forged property document on the table.

"Did you help them do this?"

"No."

"Did you tell Carmen about my trust?"

Michael looked at me.

I said nothing.

"Uncle Michael."

He sighed.

"I mentioned it."

Sofia's eyes filled.

"Why?"

"It wasn't supposed to become this."

"What was it supposed to become?"

"Carmen said Javier needed financial stability."

"So you sold information about me?"

"No."

"You got sixty thousand dollars."

Michael looked shocked.

"How do you know that?"

Sofia laughed through tears.

"So it's true."

He rubbed his face.

"I owed money."

"How much?"

"A lot."

"To who?"

"People you don't want to meet."

My anger finally broke.

"You used my daughter to pay gambling debt?"

"I gave information."

"You gave them a target!"

Michael slammed his hand on the table.

"I didn't know Carmen was crazy!"

Several people looked toward us.

He lowered his voice.

"She told me Javier loved Sofia."

"Then why did she need details about the trust?"

"She said they were building a future."

Sofia stared at him.

"Did you know Darren planned to forge my signature?"

"No."

"I don't believe you."

"I swear."

"Did you know they were going to force me to sign?"

Michael didn't answer.

Sofia went still.

"You knew."

His eyes filled.

"I thought they'd pressure you."

"Pressure me how?"

"Arguments. Family pressure. Nothing like..."

He looked at her bruises.

His face collapsed.

"Not this."

Sofia stood.

"Do you know what I heard while they were hurting me?"

Michael covered his mouth.

"I heard them laughing."

Tears rolled down his face.

"I'm sorry."

She shook her head.

"You sold my name."

"Sofia—"

"You sold information about my home, my trust, my marriage."

She picked up the document.

"And then you left me to find out how far they'd go."

Michael broke.

"I can help."

I stared at him.

"How?"

"I have messages."

"From Carmen?"

"Darren."

Alexander had been watching from another table, just as arranged.

He stood.

Michael saw him.

His eyes widened.

"You."

Alexander walked over.

"Show us."

Michael hesitated.

"If I give you everything, they'll come after me."

Alexander sat across from him.

"They already own your fear."

Michael looked down.

"Give Reynolds the phone," Alexander said. "Tell the truth. Whatever happens after that, at least you stop helping them."

Michael cried silently.

Then he removed his phone.

He unlocked it.

Inside were dozens of messages.

Some from Darren.

Some from Carmen.

Some discussing Sofia's condo.

Some discussing the trust.

And one message that made Alexander read it twice.

THE COLONEL'S DAUGHTER IS WORTH MORE MARRIED THAN SINGLE. GET THE CEREMONY DONE BEFORE THE LOAN DEADLINE.

Another read:

JAVIER DOESN'T NEED ACCESS FOREVER. SIXTY DAYS IS ENOUGH.

Sofia covered her mouth.

Michael whispered, "There's more."

He opened an audio message.

Darren's voice played quietly.

"If Sofia refuses, Carmen has ways of correcting behavior. Javier understands what's at stake."

Nobody moved.

Then came another recording.

Carmen.

"She'll sign. Every bride wants to please her husband eventually."

Sofia started shaking.

Alexander reached toward her.

But she raised one hand.

"I'm okay."

She wasn't.

But she wanted to stand.

So we let her.

Michael handed his phone to Detective Reynolds when she entered.

"I'll give a full statement."

Reynolds nodded.

"You understand you may be implicating yourself."

"Yes."

"Why cooperate now?"

Michael looked at Sofia.

"Because I finally saw what my cowardice bought."

Sofia turned away.

I wanted to forgive my brother.

I couldn't.

Maybe someday.

Not today.

As Reynolds escorted Michael out, Rebecca's phone rang.

She answered.

Listened.

Then her expression sharpened.

"What?"

Alexander looked at her.

"What happened?"

Rebecca lowered the phone.

"Someone just filed an emergency petition claiming Sofia is mentally incompetent."

Sofia stared at her.

"What?"

Rebecca's face hardened.

"The petitioner is Javier."

I stood.

"What does he want?"

"Temporary control over marital assets."

Alexander's eyes went cold.

"They're changing tactics."

Rebecca nodded.

"If they can't force Sofia to sign, they're going to try to convince a court she isn't capable of making decisions."

Sofia looked at the bruises on her arms.

"They did this to me."

Then she looked up.

"And now they're going to use it to say I'm crazy."

Alexander stepped beside her.

"No."

Sofia's voice became steady.

"They want a courtroom?"

She picked up her hospital report.

"Then let's give them one."
