What Noah Heard at Home · Chapter 5 of 6

Chapter 5

By My Life Story Editorial · Published · Updated

Jason did not disappear quietly.

Men like him rarely do when they believe something belongs to them.

He called Rachel constantly.

Then me.

I stopped answering.

He sent emails insisting everything had been misunderstood.

Then he became apologetic.

Then angry.

Then apologetic again.

Finally, he came to the nursery.

I was inspecting a delivery when I saw him walking toward me.

“Evelyn.”

“This is private property.”

“I need five minutes.”

“You have two.”

He looked around.

“This place is worth millions.”

There it was again.

Value.

Never beauty.

Never history.

Never the decades of work.

Just numbers.

“You destroyed my marriage.”

“No. Your decisions damaged your marriage.”

“You turned Rachel against me.”

“Rachel made her own decision.”

“She belongs with me.”

“My daughter belongs to herself.”

His jaw tightened.

“What did you do with the estate?”

I almost smiled.

“So that’s why you came.”

“I’m asking a legitimate question.”

“No, Jason. You’re asking when you get paid for my death.”

He looked stunned.

“Noah told me.”

For the first time, he had nothing to say.

“I heard you in Dallas too.”

His face changed.

“You misunderstood.”

“I understood every word.”

He stepped closer.

“You think Rachel can survive without me?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“The same way I did.”

He laughed bitterly.

“She’s not you.”

“No.”

I looked toward the greenhouse where Rachel was working.

“She’s becoming herself.”

Jason left without another word.

That evening, Rachel asked what he wanted.

“The house.”

Her face fell.

“Of course.”

I touched her shoulder.

“He can’t have it.”

“Because you changed the will?”

“Because I’m alive.”

Rachel laughed unexpectedly.

So did I.

And for the first time, the subject of my death no longer frightened me.

Because nobody was waiting to inherit control of my life anymore.
