Chapter 2

Justin stared at me as though I had suddenly begun speaking another language.

“What did you just say?”

Richard glanced sharply between us.

“Justin?”

But Justin barely heard him.

His eyes remained fixed on me.

“You said you'd decide whether I keep my job.”

“I did.”

His face tightened.

“How?”

I placed my phone beside the envelope.

“That conversation isn't appropriate for a restaurant.”

Richard gave a humorless laugh.

“Then perhaps you shouldn't have taken a business call during dinner.”

I looked at him.

“It became a business dinner the moment you put a price on my dignity.”

Chloe closed her eyes.

Beatrice shifted in her chair.

Richard's confidence faltered, but only briefly.

“Let's not become melodramatic.”

Justin leaned toward me.

“Ramona, who called you?”

I said nothing.

His voice rose.

“Who was that?”

People at the nearby table glanced toward us.

Chloe touched his arm.

“Justin.”

He pulled away.

“Did someone from Fletcher call you?”

That finally got my attention.

I looked directly at him.

His face changed.

Not much.

But enough.

Fear was beginning to replace confusion.

I remembered a conversation from nearly a year earlier.

Justin had been boasting about a restructuring project.

“Our CEO doesn't bother with small operational decisions,” he said. “There's supposedly someone above everything. Some private chairwoman or investor nobody sees.”

I had asked, “Does that bother you?”

He laughed.

“Not really. Whoever she is probably inherited money and lets professionals run things.”

Chloe had kicked me lightly under the table to stop me from smiling.

Now Justin looked at me as if he were remembering that conversation too.

“Who are you?” he whispered.

Chloe stiffened.

“Justin.”

“No, Chloe.”

He turned toward her.

“You knew something.”

Her silence answered him.

Justin stood.

The waiter immediately approached, but Richard waved him away.

“Sit down,” his father ordered.

Justin remained standing.

“You knew?”

Chloe's eyes filled.

“I knew Mom had business interests.”

“Business interests?”

He laughed once.

It was not amusement.

“You've been married to me for two years.”

“And you never asked about her life unless you were making assumptions.”

“That is not fair.”

Ramona.

He didn't say my name.

But the thought appeared on his face.

I could see him working backward through every conversation.

Every joke.

Every condescending remark.

Every time he had explained logistics to me.

Every time he had spoken about Fletcher executives as though I couldn't possibly understand corporate operations.

Richard finally lost patience.

“Would someone explain what's happening?”

I looked at Chloe.

She stared down at her plate.

I did not want her humiliation to become entertainment.

But Richard had created this moment.

So I answered.

“Fletcher Logistics Group belongs to me.”

Silence.

Richard's eyebrows pulled together.

“No, it doesn't.”

I almost admired the confidence.

“That's an interesting response.”

“Fletcher Logistics is a multibillion-dollar private corporation.”

“Yes.”

“Malcolm Avery runs it.”

“He runs public operations.”

Beatrice's mouth opened slightly.

Justin remained standing.

I continued.

“I founded the original company with my husband. After Samuel died, I purchased the remaining outside interests and expanded the business through a holding structure. I am chairwoman and controlling owner.”

Justin slowly sat down.

Nobody spoke.

Then Richard laughed.

Not loudly.

But dismissively.

“That is absurd.”

Chloe looked up.

“It's true.”

His laugh stopped.

Beatrice stared at her.

“You knew?”

“She's my mother.”

Richard looked at me.

Then at my dress.

Then at my handbag.

People reveal themselves in strange ways.

Even faced with information that should have rearranged his entire understanding, Richard still measured truth by appearance.

“You live in that little house,” he said.

“Yes.”

“You drive an old car.”

“Yes.”

Beatrice whispered, “Why?”

“Because I like my house and my car works.”

She looked genuinely confused.

Justin rubbed his face.

“You own Fletcher?”

“I do.”

“My division?”

“Yes.”

“My building?”

“The company leases it.”

He swallowed.

“And Malcolm Avery reports to you?”

“Ultimately.”

His eyes moved toward the check.

The insult sitting between us suddenly looked very different.

Richard seemed to notice it too.

He reached toward the envelope.

I placed two fingers on it.

“No.”

He stopped.

“Excuse me?”

“You wanted me to have it.”

His face reddened.

“That was before—”

“Before you learned I was wealthy?”

He said nothing.

“That,” I continued, “is precisely why I'm keeping it.”

Chloe stared at her husband.

“You knew about this?”

“Chloe…”

“Did you know your father was giving my mother money?”

“I knew they wanted to help.”

“Help?”

Her voice broke.

“You sat there while he told her she embarrassed this family.”

“I didn't know he was going to phrase it that way.”

Richard snapped, “I was trying to protect your future.”

“My future from what?”

He gestured toward me, then froze.

There was no version of that gesture that could survive the new information.

Chloe stood.

“From my mother?”

Beatrice spoke gently.

“Sweetheart, everyone misunderstood.”

I watched my daughter's expression change.

For two years, she had defended these people.

Excused them.

Ignored comments.

Smoothed awkward moments.

Tonight, something cracked.

“No,” she said. “I think I'm finally understanding perfectly.”

Justin reached for her hand.

She stepped back.

“Don't.”

“Chloe, please.”

“Did you know about the check?”

He hesitated.

Two seconds.

That was all.

But sometimes two seconds contains an entire confession.

Chloe's face fell.

“You did.”

“I thought it would make things easier.”

“For whom?”

“Everyone.”

She shook her head.

“No. For you.”

Justin looked toward me.

“Ramona, about the call—”

I raised one hand.

“We're not discussing your employment here.”

His fear sharpened.

“Am I under investigation?”

Richard immediately turned.

“Investigation?”

Justin's jaw tightened.

I had not intended to mention the compliance issue.

But Justin had done that himself.

Chloe looked at him.

“What investigation?”

“It's probably nothing.”

“That isn't an answer.”

He looked at me desperately.

“What did Malcolm say?”

“I said we aren't discussing it here.”

Richard leaned forward.

“If my son's career is being threatened because of a family misunderstanding—”

“It isn't.”

“Then clarify.”

“No.”

He stared at me.

That word unsettled him more than shouting would have.

Richard was accustomed to people explaining themselves when he demanded it.

I wasn't one of them.

I stood.

Chloe immediately picked up her purse.

Justin rose again.

“Chloe, where are you going?”

“With my mother.”

“We came together.”

“I know.”

His face softened.

“Don't do this.”

She stared at him.

“You watched your father humiliate my mother.”

“I made a mistake.”

“You didn't make a mistake.”

Her eyes moved toward the check.

“You made a choice.”

Beatrice looked horrified.

“Chloe, don't turn one uncomfortable conversation into a marriage crisis.”

Chloe answered quietly.

“This isn't one conversation.”

That sentence silenced everyone.

I realized there were things my daughter had not told me.

Justin realized it too.

“What does that mean?”

Chloe shook her head.

“Not here.”

We walked toward the restaurant entrance.

Behind us, Richard called my name.

“Ramona.”

I stopped.

He approached.

His face had regained some composure.

“I think we should all be reasonable.”

I looked at him.

“I have been.”

“There are reputations involved.”

“Yes.”

“My son's.”

“Yes.”

“Ours.”

I waited.

He lowered his voice.

“If you're really who you say you are, you'll understand why people in our position care about appearances.”

There it was.

Even now.

He had learned nothing.

I slipped the envelope containing his check into my handbag.

“You still think your position is the important one.”

Richard's face hardened.

I turned and followed Chloe outside.

The night air was cooler than I expected.

Chloe reached the sidewalk before breaking down.

Not dramatically.

She simply covered her face.

“I'm sorry.”

I wrapped my arms around her.

“You didn't do this.”

“I should've said something earlier.”

“About what?”

She pulled back.

Her eyes were wet.

“Justin has been pressuring me for months.”

“For what?”

“To stop working.”

That surprised me.

Chloe loved her job as an interior architect.

“Why?”

“He says his wife shouldn't be working on small residential projects now that he's moving up.”

I felt something tighten inside me.

“What else?”

She wiped her eyes.

“He wants us to move closer to his parents.”

“Do you?”

“No.”

“Then don't.”

She gave a broken laugh.

“You make it sound easy.”

“It isn't.”

I touched her cheek.

“But difficult and impossible are not the same thing.”

Her phone rang.

Justin.

She silenced it.

Then mine rang.

Malcolm again.

This time I answered immediately.

“Tell me.”

His voice was serious.

The internal review had expanded.

Contracts Justin helped approve showed unusual consulting payments.

Three vendors were connected to the same private investment entity.

That entity was linked to someone named—

Malcolm hesitated.

“Richard Gallagher.”

I looked through the restaurant window.

Richard stood at the table with his son, speaking urgently.

Suddenly the envelope in my handbag felt less like an insult.

And more like a warning.
